For many people, algae and algal blooms are negative and harmful phenomena. But we try to turn this negative into a positive situation. As the most important type of species on the earth, algae will be invited to the center stage to blossom into a new landscape form. As algae growth becomes a controlled landscape, people’s views of algae and awareness of algal blooms will change. We hope this algal landscape can become a seasonal symbol, a recurrent landscape, and an environmental system, just like the cherry blossom around us.
Choosing the inner-bay area located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, we proposed to use the strategy of floating islands to build an algae trait system that contains three parts of this design, including Forecasting and Early Warning; Controlling and Responding; Touring and Participating phase. Two kinds of floating island systems are created on the site.
This Algae Blossom design is a prototype that could be used in the whole Bay as a bold experiment of algae landscape and help translate the common acknowledgment of harmful algal bloom to the Beneficial algae blossom.
